Working knowledge of OSHA General Industry Standards, EPA Air, Water & Waste Regulations.

Experience developing policies and SOPs related to Environmental Health and Safety.

Previous experience supervising, coaching, and empowering staff, and administering a program.

Job Description:

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Iowa State University (ISU) is currently seeking qualified applicants to lead the management of all environmental programs impacting ISU. EH&S is an employing unit that reports to the Office of University Counsel at ISU. EH&S aids the campus community in preventing illness and injury, protecting the environment, and connecting the university to the message of safety and preparedness. EH&S delivers effective education, fosters beneficial partnerships, maintains technical expertise, and provides exemplary service.

This position will lead regulatory compliance assistance for all University laboratories and other campus facilities, interact with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, and provide technical expertise during hazardous material emergencies. Programs managed include federally mandated Clean Water Act (CWA), Clean Air Act (CAA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and various related programs including National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC), Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4), Campus Title V permit and non-domestic Wastewater (NDW2) programs. Additional responsibilities will include supervision of staff on the Environmental Programs team that conducts environmental sampling, campus inspections, and inventories materials and equipment as required by the university’s multiple permits and as well as assisting sustainability efforts related to hazardous waste minimization and recycling.

The Environmental Programs (EP) team works with campus staff to collect hazardous materials, including chemical, radiological, biological, and other special waste streams, and transports hazardous materials to the ISU-Regulated Materials Facility (ISU-RMF). The EP team also operates a pathological waste incinerator; provides training on environmental topics to university personnel; and leads in the overall operation of the RCRA, UST, AST, and other regulatory programs.

Example of Duties

  • Interprets environmental regulations, guidelines, and best practices and authors compliance manuals and resources.

  • Assists with program budget, purchasing, and activity reporting.

  • Conducts activities that support research such as obtaining permits, coordinating resources, and providing consultation.

  • Drafts regulatory reports.

  • Provides support to campus clients and coordinates worksite inspections.

  • Supervises, coordinates work assignments, conducts evaluations, and trains staff.

  • May perform any duties of a professional level environmental engineer.

  • This position requires the ability to lift forty pounds with or without reasonable accommodation, have sufficient manual dexterity to manage chemical containers and work with tools; and wear a respirator.
