Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) and the Global Resource Systems (GRS) program housed in the Department of Horticulture in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University seek applicants for an Assistant Professor in biodiversity conservation. The position is a 9-month, tenure-eligible appointment and has responsibilities in teaching (45%), research (45%), and service (10%). The position will be based in the NREM department with teaching responsibilities in the GRS program.
We seek an individual with expertise in biodiversity conservation. The candidate will develop an externally funded research program focused on fisheries or wildlife in a scholarly discipline that could include conservation biology, conservation planning, fisheries or wildlife ecology in human-dominated/altered ecosystems, landscape ecology, restoration ecology, or threatened/endangered species management and policy, or a related field. Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in research is expected.
The candidate will contribute to one required undergraduate course in NREM (coordinating the Vertebrate Biology labs), lead one elective course in NREM (Natural Resource Policy), and develop a graduate course in their area of expertise that meets NREM departmental needs. A portion of the teaching effort will be to provide expertise to two GRS courses.
The candidate will provide service to the departments, institution, and profession through committees and student-focused programs. All three responsibilities (research, teaching, and service) will require the successful candidate to have excellent oral and written communication skills.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or equivalent in biodiversity conservation, conservation biology, natural resource management, fisheries or wildlife ecology, or a closely related field by the hire date
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience conducting applied research that informs conservation, management, and/or policy decisions of fisheries or wildlife
Experience supervising/mentoring staff and/or graduate and undergraduate students in conducting research
Experience teaching at the college level
Experience writing grants and obtaining external funding support for research activities
Peer-reviewed publication record in biodiversity conservation, fisheries or wildlife ecology, or closely related fields
Post-doctoral experience
Department, Program & College Description:
The NREM Department is housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, which is dedicated to the Land Grant missions of teaching, research, and extension. The Department is broad in scope, with 375 undergraduate students in Animal Ecology, 80 students in Forestry, and >50 graduate students in Fisheries Biology, Forestry, and Wildlife Ecology or in Interdepartmental Graduate Programs with NREM faculty affiliations. The department houses the U.S. Geological Survey’s Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. In addition to on-campus facilities for teaching and research, NREM manages the Rod and Connie French Conservation Camp in western Montana as well as a facility that could serve as an aviary and artificial ponds 8 miles north of the main ISU campus.
Global Resource Systems is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and housed in the Department of Horticulture. Students develop a core set of technical competencies in a resource area selected from the majors, minors and certificates offered by CALS. They complete a global internship and senior project related to their resource specialization within the context of a world region. The undergraduate experience culminates with a senior capstone course, where students work with real-world clients to address global resource challenges. Multidisciplinary themes are developed in the context of the physical, biological, and socio-economic factors affecting global resource systems. Academic service-learning programs are offered as semester-long and short term. GRS faculty lead service-learning programs in Uganda, supported by the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods.
