Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Iowa State University is seeking an Assistant Teaching Professor of German to teach introductory and intermediate courses in language, literature, and culture. The teaching duties include overseeing and teaching beginning and intermediate language with the possibility of teaching advanced language and culture courses. This position will also have the opportunity to participate fully in the scholarly and professional life of the department. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively in German and English with students, faculty, and staff. Teaching load is 3-3. Initial three-year contract with the possibility of renewal.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.A. in German or related field;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in German, German Studies, or related field;

  • Evidence of successful stand-alone teaching experience at beginning and intermediate levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to instruct upper-division (advanced) content and language courses in German Studies;

  • Near-native fluency in German;

  • Experience directing beginning and intermediate language program.

Department/Program & College Description:

The Department of World Languages and Cultures is the central resource at Iowa State University for the teaching, research, and study of cultures in and through their native languages from a global perspective. The department offers 9 languages with majors in French, German, and Spanish and minors in those languages plus Russian and Chinese. Other languages taught are American Sign Language, Arabic, Greek, and Latin. It also houses the International Studies and Classical Studies programs. The department’s 19 award-winning tenure-stream faculty engage in internationally recognized research across a variety of disciplines.
