Job Description

The Iowa Department of Transportation is looking to add a people leader to our Bridge Maintenance and Inspection team! In this role you will oversee the statewide bridge inspection and maintenance program. As a people leader you will manage your staff’s daily operations, professional development and growth, and performance measures with a mindset focused on our five core values:Safety First, People Matter, Customer Focused, Servant Leadership, and Integrity Without Exception.

This position allows for a flexible schedule Monday through Friday, with requirement to report to the Central Complex, located in Ames, Iowa. Travel for inspection, bi-state meetings, conference, and workshops may be required.

As the Bridge Maintenance and Inspection Engineer | Transportation Engineer Administrator, you will be responsible for aligning efforts of commitment, transparency, accountability, and ethical behavior of this team. By empowering staff to grow and develop in their professional career and a willingness to foster an environment of diversity and inclusion with civility and innovation. You will be responsible for strategic human resources activities including, hiring, employee retention, workforce planning, job responsibilities for employees, corrective employee actions, performance evaluations, time management, absence management, employee guidance, and counseling. All activities should be in direct relation to the department's core values goals as laid out in its business plan.

Daily duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical direction and engineering assistance to subordinate professional engineers, engineers, technicians, and bridge inspectors in the inspection activities of the Bridges and Structures Bureau ensuring compliance with the National Bridge Inspections Standards.

  • Manage a statewide bridge maintenance program to identify and implement bridge preservation, bridge repair, and bridge rehabilitation projects. The state system is comprised of over 4,100 bridges including border bridges and major and complex structures.

  • Identify bridge and structures project candidates for the Iowa DOT’s five-year Transportation Improvement Program in cooperation with the six DOT Districts to maintain the bridge inventory in a state of good repair.

  • Identify solutions to problems encountered with bridges due to deterioration, oversized vehicle strikes, flooding, scour and other effects. Time sensitive travel to bridge sites for independent investigation may be required.

  • Administer a program to provide oversight of local public agencies approximately 20,000 bridges to maintain compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards.

    The best candidate for this role will have a passion for bridge stewardship and a willingness to investigate and solve complex bridge engineering problems. You’ll need excellent communication skills to work with all levels of management, your team, and a variety of parties to ensure effective and efficient success for the bridge maintenance and inspection team and the agency as a whole. Special Requirements:

Responsible for maintaining a professional engineer license by meeting continuing education requirements and all other professional obligations required by the State of Iowa.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) All of the following (a and b):

a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and

b. Four years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibilities.

2) All of the following (a, b, and c):

a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and

b. Three years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included supervisory/managerial responsibilities; and

c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.

3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Manager or Transportation Engineer Senior or three years of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer Specialist.

Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
