Ames Laboratory is seeking a dynamic strategic thinker and leader to serve as the Director of Laboratory Performance Management, also known as the Chief Planning and Performance Officer (CPPO). The successful candidate will demonstrate a proven track record of organizational strategic planning, project management excellence, and success in a dynamic environment. The candidate will be responsible for all aspects of Laboratory planning, risk management, and performance assurance to achieve institutional goals and objectives. The ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects with multiple priorities within a complex scientific research environment is essential.

Ames National Laboratory is a Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratory managed by Iowa State University (ISU) and designated a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC). The annual budget of the Laboratory is approximately $65M which supports 450 employees executing its scientific mission to deliver critical materials solutions to the Nation. Approximately 95% of the Laboratory’s funding comes from federal and state taxpayers, creating a special relationship of stewardship and trust with the public. Therefore, the CPPO is expected to exercise, model, and ensure the highest standards of planning and performance management demonstrating our responsibility to the citizens who support our research. The CPPO directly interacts with DOE’s Ames Site Office (AMSO), which provides oversight of the operational and management performance of laboratory.

Reporting to the Laboratory Director, the CPPO is one of four members of the Laboratory’s core executive team and leads a direct team of six professionals focused on laboratory planning, performance, records management, process improvement, learning & development, and change management. Additionally, the CPPO leads multi-disciplined teams from across the Laboratory charged with strategic planning and implementation, effective laboratory / space utilization that promotes safe research capabilities, financial audit response, and the development of future research needs and capabilities.
