Position Title:Clinical Assistant or Associate Professor – Diagnostic Medicine

Appointment Type:Faculty

Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa invites nominations and applications for a full-time clinical term faculty position at the rank of Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor in diagnostic medicine in our Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ISU VDL) is an AAVLD-accredited, full-service laboratory that serves veterinarians and animal owners of the state of Iowa and across the United States. The caseload is diverse with swine representing the majority of submissions.

The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide leadership to the ISU VDL’s Client Services, Client Education, and the VDL Client and Public Outreach related functions. These responsibilities include serving as a principal liaison between the ISU VDL and its clients (veterinarians, veterinary clinics, food animal production companies, independent producers, biopharma, researchers, and state or federal veterinary medical officers) to assist with the development of best practices and troubleshoot problems with submissions, samples, and results, while answering any questions regarding the laboratory. This position will play a critical role in providing support and technical training of the laboratory’s efforts to continually improve the connectivity, quality, and value of the incoming and outgoing information flowing between the ISU VDL and its clientele. Such efforts will include being responsible for managing a myriad of multidisciplinary system improvement initiatives taking place across that laboratory and in partnership with VDL’s clientele that collectively aim to enhance the overall quality, value, and standard of practice in food animal diagnostic medicine. This individual will also play an active role in hosting and orientating the many visitors (e.g., clients and stakeholders) to ISU VDL’s operations and the role that the VDL plays in protecting animal and human health, the safety and security of our food supply, and in advancing Iowa and US animal agriculture.

This position will also be responsible for coordinating molecular diagnostic case submissions to the laboratory. This responsibility involves extensive effort in fielding client questions and responding to client requests in helping VDL clientele to understand the context of the test results and guide any necessary next steps or further testing. The ability to interact, communicate, and collaborate with progressive practicing veterinarians and other stakeholders in animal agriculture is essential.

This individual will be responsible for teaching fourth-year veterinary students many of the practical aspects of how to best utilize and fully capitalize on the resources and services provided by the VDL as a practicing veterinarian. This position will also have the opportunity to establish collaborative research opportunities and mentor graduate students.

The successful candidate must have a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in departmental programs and committees. Iowa State University especially seeks candidates who are interested in contributing to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through

their service, teaching, research, and outreach. The candidate will demonstrate commitment to delivering exceptional diagnostic service, dedication to all levels of education, and contribute to the national prominence of the ISU VDL, VDPAM, and Iowa State University.
