Required Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:Degree in Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Safety & Health, Biology/Life Sciences, Health Physics or Nuclear Sciences, Engineering, or related field.

Experience which demonstrates exceptional performance in one or more of the following areas: safety culture, construction safety, laboratory safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, general safety, biosafety, radiation safety, regulatory compliance, or other related ESH activities.

Demonstrate work experience at a Department of Energy National Laboratory, college/university, or other research laboratory

Demonstrated experience reading, interpreting, and implementing federal directives, manuals, guidance, initiatives, and related compliance and reporting requirements.

Familiarity with the International Fire Code and National Fire Protection Association standards (e.g., IFC, NFPA 2, 13, 30, 37, 45, 55, 45, 30, 497, 654, 101, 110, 400, etc.).

Certification in one or more of the following: ASP, CSP, CIH, CHMM, CHP, RSO

Ames National Laboratory is seeking an Occupational Safety Specialist II (pay grade 09) or III (pay grade 10) to join the Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) team. Reporting to the current Occupational Safety Specialist III, collaborates with the ESH team, Facilities and Engineering Services, Researchers, and Leadership, often under strict deadlines and changing priorities, to ensure compliance with various laws, regulations, standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures where physical, biological, and chemical hazards may be present. This position supports staff, students, researchers, and others in the development of work planning and control packages; identifying and mitigating hazards; providing environmental, radiological, safety, and chemical and industrial hygiene programmatic documentation and resources; and works to create consistency across plans and procedures. Utilizes strong internal communication to ensure Laboratory personnel are aware of safety culture, laboratory safety, and other ESH program and Ames Lab objectives. Responsible for following ESH strategic and long-range goals using stakeholder, customer, and management feedback, anticipating, and adapting to regulatory changes and aligning with Laboratory and mission requirements.

Ames Lab is a federal facility and must comply with multiple Orders and regulations which enhance or differ from industry rules mandated by OSHA and EPA. The Occupational Safety Specialist must be able to interpret and adapt complicated regulatory terms and requirements while applying professional knowledge to solve complex problems related to life and property protection, such as fire, electrical, and industrial safety.

Excellent coordination and communication skills are needed to effectively negotiate and appropriately influence the safety behavior of individual lab workers, group leaders, and research lab groups towards better procedures for best management practices. This position involves multiple tasks and requires the ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and identify opportunities to work as efficiently as possible.

Occupational Safety Specialist II (pay grade 9) Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related experience

Occupational Safety Specialist III (pay grade 10) Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
