Under the direction of the Park and Facilities Superintendent, leads team in work assignments and participates in the work necessary to assure excellent parks and recreational grounds, facilities and cemeteries. Through leadership, performs a variety of managerial and technical tasks related to performing assigned areas of responsibility.

Compensation Philosophy: The City of Ames has a compensation philosophy that the starting pay for our merit salary ranges establishes the salary for employees who meet minimum requirements of a position. The median of any merit salary range is for an employee who can reasonably meet all expectations of the position responsibilities without initial extensive training. In order for employees to have an opportunity to grow within their position, we may consider a candidate's education, experience, and skills above the minimum requirements when looking at a salary closer to or slightly above the median. The median for this position is $78,056 annualized.

Under the direction of the Parks and Facilities Superintendent, the Parks and Facilities Supervisor prioritizes, plans, schedules, and leads a team of employees (including seasonal workers) in the construction, maintenance, management, and evaluation of the Citys parks and recreational grounds, facilities, and cemeteries; leads efforts related to employee selection; motivates and manages/leads the performance of assigned team members; with the employee, develops and implements work plans to correct deficiencies; recommends and assists in the implementation of division/department goals and objectives; assures grounds and facilities are inspected and plans are implemented for needed maintenance and repairs; assures that inventory supplies, equipment, and chemicals needed to perform functions are maintained; assures the response to emergency situations after hours; provides information to the public concerning parks and recreation programs, activities, policies and procedures; investigates concerns and takes corrective action; ensures and directs staff to utilize safe work practices; prepares reports on operations and work activities; develops and implements preventative maintenance plans, prepares cost estimates; assists in preparation of the annual budget and reviews budgetary expenditures and revenues; assists in the development of specifications for competitive bidding; coordinates staff development, conferences and professional meetings for the team and its members; operates various equipment to perform essential functions; works wit contractors; reads blueprints and plans; enthusiastically works with and supports other City departments; works with community service groups, individuals, staff, and volunteers to assure quality parks and facilities; performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience: An Associate's degree and three years of experience in park maintenance, horticulture, forestry, landscape design, building maintenance, construction management or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.One year of experience supervising staff is preferred.

Licenses and Certificates: Must possess a valid drivers license. Must obtain Iowa Pesticide Applicator Certification within six months of appointment. Must obtain certified pool operator for the State of Iowa within six months of employment. Must obtain a Class A CDL within three months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of methods, principles, practices, and equipment involved in the care and maintenance of parks, athletic fields, and facilities; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for a variety of maintenance activities; knowledge of the appropriate uses and applications of pesticides; knowledge of principles and practices of landscaping; knowledge of building or mechanical trades; knowledge of customer service principles and practices; knowledge of budgeting.

Skill in leading a team, continuous improvement, problem solving, data-driven decision-making, and planning/directing the work of others. Skill in providing meaningful feedback, whereby connecting the organization's values to the work performed by the team member(s) within this division.

Ability to effectively organize, manage, and coordinate the activities of division staff; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, coworkers, other City departments, and the public; ability to work independently and in a teaming environment; ability to operate various equipment; ability to collect and analyze meaningful data to make or recommend changes.

Physical and Environmental Conditions: General Physical Characteristics: The work involves sitting and using arm/leg controls 30% of the time; standing and walking 30% of the time, standing but not walking 20% of the time; sitting 20% (includes using a computer); frequently lifting objects under 10 pounds; occasionally lifting objects up to 50 pounds and infrequently lifting objects over 50 pounds.
