Required Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:• Prior research experience in wireless, networks, and/or distributed systems

• Research experience and quality publications in advanced wireless systems (e.g., safety-critical wireless, URLLC, Open RAN, 6G/NextG)

• Experience with cellular network platforms (e.g., O-RAN, srsRAN, OpenAirInterface, ONF SD-RAN), edge/cloud computing platforms (e.g., Kubernetes, OpenStack), SDN, and/or VNF

• Experience designing, developing, deploying, and/or operating field-deployed wireless, network, and/or distributed systems

• Experience in edge/cloud systems management, virtual machines/containers, Linux systems administration, and/or shell scripting

• Demonstrated capability of building systems prototypes, by record of reference publications and/or open-source software

• Experience that demonstrates knowledge of wireless systems, networked/distributed systems, operating systems, virtualization, systems and network security

• Programming experience in Python, C, C++, Java, and/or Web

Summary

The Center for Wireless Communities and Innovation (http://wici.iastate.edu/) (WiCI) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Research Scientist III to join our team. WiCI is dedicated to advancing the forefront of wireless technologies and their transformative applications across various domains, and fosters an innovative research environment that encourages impactful contributions to both academia and industry.

This is a fixed term position, with expectation for renewal based on availability of funding.

Core Responsibilities Involve:

• Leading or participating in the development, deployment, and operation of research prototypes in Open RAN and advanced wireless systems.

• Supervising teams of students and technical staff members in the development, deployment, and operation of wireless systems.

• Collaborating closely with faculty members and public-private project partners in project execution.

• Leading and contributing to cutting-edge research that pushes the boundaries of Open RAN, wireless systems, edge and cloud computing, and rural broadband technologies.

• Working collaboratively with students, postdocs, technical staff members, and public-private partners in research initiatives and funding acquisition efforts.

• Publishing research findings in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

• Leading research funding acquisition activities, including leading proposals to federal and state agencies, as well as industry partners.

Level Guidelines• Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU’s mission and department or work unit goals• Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude• Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action• Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist• Provides guidance to students
