JOB TITLE Elementary Special Education Teacher

REPORTS TO Building Administrator

QUALIFICATIONS

  • State of Iowa teaching certification, Strategist I

  • Mandatory Reporter: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse certification

  • Must clear criminal record check and child and adult abuse check (unless on Initial License)

  • Able to prioritize, organize, and accomplish assigned work

  • Able to work independently and/or as a team

  • Able to recognize problems, determine causes, and take appropriate action

  • Able to supervise and direct employees

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instruct students in academic subjects and social skills, using a variety of strategies

  • Prepare classrooms for class activities and provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use in learning activities

  • Teach socially acceptable behavior, employing strategies such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement

  • Modify general education curriculum to meet the learning needs of students

  • Confer with parents and guardians to discuss their child’s needs and progress

  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction

  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and policies and procedures to maintain order

  • Collaborate with parents, administrators, AEA staff to develop and implement Individual Educational Plans

  • Train para-educators assigned to students on the teacher’s roster

  • Monitor teachers and para-educators to ensure they adhere to the requirements of students’ Individual Education Plans

  • Assess and evaluate students using appropriate and accurate records of such assessments

  • Maintain accurate and complete records and prepare reports as required by laws, district policies and administrative regulations

  • Comply with all state and federal laws regarding the instruction and supervision of students

  • Maintain a professional manner and decorum in all interactions

  • Design and implement an individual career development plan

  • Serve on school and district level staff committees as requested

  • Participate in district professional development as directed

  • Collaborate with other staff members to meet student needs and to implement the goals of the building and district

  • Keep abreast of current and emerging educational research, trends, and pedagogical techniques

  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for all students

  • Diagnose learning problems of students , seeking assistance of available specialists as necessary

  • Able to work with interruptions

  • Able to stand/walk throughout the day

  • Able to lift/carry students for short distances/periods of time

  • Able to stoop and bend

  • Noise level may be quiet to loud

  • Work may be indoors or out

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Wage and work year to be established by Administration as outlined in the Master Contract

  • Employment per Board Policies and Administrative Rules and regulations

  • Evaluation as outlined in the Master Contract

  • Substance free environment

Evaluation:

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with board policy and terms of the Master Contract
