Applications are being accepted for our Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Apprenticeship Program to work at our Cedar Rapids, Iowa facility. This program is registered with the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship & Training. The training is a 4-year program designed to provide technical knowledge/skill through classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Areas covered include electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, engine repair, water treatment, painting, welding, sheet metal and ground care.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs operation, preventive maintenance work and repair of heating, air conditioning, water systems, air compressors, air lines, sprinkler system, process equipment, plumbing, boilers, chiller, and other equipment maintained by the Building Maintenance Department.

  • Removes and installs partitions, walls, ceilings, floors, equipment, duct work, piping, etc.

  • Uses a variety of hand tools. Performs welding operations using electrical and acetylene torch, reads drawings common to this type of work, identifies all types of fittings, makes material estimates for repair work and material lists from drawings to complete a job.

  • Works inside and outside the plant.

  • Paints, prepares surfaces for painting, and applies a variety of paints, stains, varnishes and other protective coatings by brush, roller, or spray gun.

  • Responsible for the care of trees and shrubs such as removing and transplanting, pruning, fertilizing, preparing solutions and spraying for insects and disease.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of chemicals and safe practices in handling of chemicals.

  • Capable of performing minor electrical work requiring the use of standard electrical diagnostic equipment.

  • Operate various equipment such as skid loaders, backhoe tractor, front end loader, etc.

  • Operate trucks and equipment, such as tractors, dump trucks, pick-up trucks, end loader, backhoe, skid loader, snowplow, load-all, graders, brooms, mowers, sweepers, hand trucks, electric powered trucks Type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, and to mount attachments on such equipment or trucks.

  • Physically capable of performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Capable of climbing, lifting and/or handling heavy parts or equipment.

  • Able to work overhead, requiring the use of ladders, scaffolds, and man-lifts.

  • May be required to work in confined space(s) requiring the use of respirators.

  • Working on feet or elevated platforms for extended periods of time.

  • Able to lift 34 pounds on a regular basis (Team lift used for heavier items).

  • Able to kneel, bend or squat to perform work on or near the ground for 3-4 hours at a time.

  • Most work during the apprenticeship will be completed on 1st shift. Must be able to work 2nd and 3rd shift rotations (with notice) throughout the 4-year term of the apprenticeship at dates to be determined.

  • After completion of the apprenticeship, candidates may be placed on either 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or weekend shifts.

  • This is a 100% onsite position.

    Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalency (GED).

  • U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or granted refugee or asylee status) as defined here: https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-22/chapter-I/subchapter-M/part-120/subpart-C/section-120.62

  • Must hold a valid Driver’s License

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Continuing education classes (4 or more credit hours) or work experience in trade-related fields (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, welding, drywall, carpentry, farming, etc.)

  • Journeyman card, apprenticeship card, etc., or applicable forms of validation.
