Job Summary

CRANDIC-Rail has an open position as a Civil Engineer , where your civil and structural expertise propels the world of transportation. Every day, you engage in a diverse array of tasks, from designing and planning rail systems to construct and install infrastructure. Your work ensures the seamless operation and maintenance of facilities, machinery, and equipment that power the movement of products and materials across our 100 miles of track. Your role is vital in transforming the railroad industry for materials for domestic, commercial, and industrial customers. Join a field where your work is impactful.

What you will do

  • Performs work on a variety of assignments of moderate scope and complexity using established procedures under limited supervision.

  • Uses tools and standards to design for safety in operating and maintaining equipment.

  • Develops an awareness of customer needs and expectations and propose solutions for moderately complex issues. Participates in the identification and solution of problems falling within assigned area of responsibility with guidance of supervisor.

  • Assists and coordinates work with local city, county and state government officials as well as the general public to apply governmental and organizational engineering standards and ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Interprets policy and exercises discretion and judgement in resolving moderately complex problems.

  • Demonstrates the ability to work with the customer to develop an acceptable score document, budget and schedule for assigned work in order to complete assignments on time and within budget.

  • Makes low risk decisions that involve direct application of technical knowledge with proper sign off from customer and minimal guidance from supervisor.

  • Participates and makes positive, supportive contributions on teams as assigned.

  • Inspects and maintains all track, structures, and right of way to specifications set by Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Railway and regulated by Federal Railroad Administration, including railway bridges, buildings, pipes, track and special facilities, referencing 49 Code of Federal Regulations part 213 regulation for track safety standards.

  • Actively participates in the departmental budgeting process. Applies the chart of accounts appropriately to MAXIMO. Can differentiate between capital and maintenance projects in accordance with the property unity catalog. Is proficient in structuring ERP requirements (i.e., requisitions, purchase orders structure and processing receipt approvals). Navigates COGNOS and can interpret the available project reports (PC400 & 500) to assure SOX compliance.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree Accredited Engineering Program (Civil Engineering Program Preferred) Preferred

Required Experience

  • 2 years of related experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Project management training/experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of land surveying preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (i.e., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, CAD, and project management).

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate information clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing

  • Ability to work in a diverse work environment.
