Job Summary

Join our dynamic team as an Engineer II – Substation, where you'll drive the design, analysis, and implementation of cutting-edge electrical substations. As a project leader, you'll collaborate closely with clients, project managers, and diverse cross-functional teams to drive the successful execution of high-impact projects. This is a hybrid-remote position reporting to Cedar Rapids, IA.

What you will do

• Leads the design and layout of electrical substations, including equipment selection, sizing, and configuration. Ensure adherence to company or client standards, guidelines, specifications, practices, and procedures in preparing design drawings.

• Ensures compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations in all substation designs and projects.

• Prepares and review engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports for substation projects, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with relevant codes and standards. Review and approve construction documents, bills of materials, and construction specifications.

• Prepares detailed engineering calculations including grounding, Alternating Current (AC) loading, Direct Current (DC) loading, bus sizing, cable sizing, etc. following standard methods and principles to ensure the integrity and reliability of substation designs.

• Evaluates and selects substation equipment and materials, considering cost, performance, and project requirements.

• Prepares and issues requests for material or services to potential suppliers. Assists in the evaluation of proposals and makes recommendations for supplier selection based on quality, cost, and delivery considerations.

• Conducts site visits and inspections to assess existing substation conditions, identify potential issues, and propose effective solutions.

• Directs external consultants, vendors, and contractors to ensure the successful execution of substation design projects.

• Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, technicians, and project managers, to ensure effective project delivery. Manages project planning, scheduling, and cost estimation.

• Prepares technical reports, proposals, and cost estimates for substation projects, outlining the scope, timeline, and resources required.

• Assists the development, implementation and maintenance of standardized design practices, procedures, standards, specifications, guidelines, and template drawings.

• Conducts incident investigations and root cause analyses for equipment failures or incidents, proposing corrective actions and preventive measures to prevent recurrence.

• Provides technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.

• Engages in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy’s Values and helps deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.

Education Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree Engineering program that is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission Required

Required Experience

• 2 years of related experience

• Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to use computer software programs (e.g., e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and project management).
