DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cedar Rapids Convention Complex is looking for a Junior Sous Chef to join our team!
We are connected to the Alliant Energy PowerHouse, home to Cedar Rapids conventions and two blocks from Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and Paramount Theatre. We are Cedar Rapids largest full-service property with 267 guest rooms and 68,000 sq. ft. of banquet space.
This position will heavily focus on PM production in our signature restaurant, 350 First.
350 First sits atop the hotel tower on the 16th floor is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Enjoy spectacular views of Cedar Rapids or the Cedar River as you dine on contemporary American fare.
The ideal candidate for this position will:
- Thrive in a high-volume environment with a passion for culinary excellence and incorporating current trends
- Possess previous production experience in a professional kitchen, previous hotel experience is a plus!

- This is a Full-Time position, candidates must have full availability including nights, weekends and holidays.

What will I be doing?
As a Junior Sous Chef, you would be responsible for assisting with the direction and oversight of all culinary operations in the hotel's continuing effort to deliver outstanding guest service and financial profitability. Specifically, a Junior Sous Chef would be responsible for performing the following tasks to the highest standards:
- Ensure consistent and smooth running of food production
- Any one is this role must possess the ability to pay attention to details. He or she should be aware of the specific ingredients and their measurement
- Ensure effective stock receipt and storage
- Ensure that working areas are always kept clean
- Passion for food: someone who enjoys the process of food preparation and creating menus
- Ability to pay attention to details: adherence to specific ingredients and measurement needed for various menus
- Ability to make quick decisions
- Ability to maintain a high level of hygiene and cleanliness in the culinary department
- Assist other kitchen staff as need arises
- Supervise performance of kitchen staff to ensure proper activity
- Perform other administrative tasks as will be communicated by superiors
- Ensure that required standards are adhered to in the production and preparation of food – in quality, quantity and safety
- Work towards exceeding customer’s expectation by encouraging and promoting high level of service
- Ensure all complaints, inquiries, and suggestions by customers are attended to accordingly
- Give appropriate support or guidance to members of kitchen when need arises
- Resolve possible disputes within the kitchen and report any unresolved
- Promote good team spirit regularly
- Ensure all dishes are prepared according to specification and served at the correct quality, portion size, and temperature
- Partly responsible for the preparation of kitchen cleaning rosters and the supervision of cleaning schedules
- Prepare substitute items
- Ensure that the kitchen staff work harmoniously in order to ensure timely production of quality foods
- Ensure proper arrangement and garnishing of food
- Manage food logs
- Monitor the quality and quantity of food prepared
- Assist in recruiting, hiring, and training employee cooks
- Report the need for maintenance to appropriate staff
- Assist the Executive Chef & Banquet Chef in the direction and oversight of all culinary operations, to include, but not limited to, preparation and production of all hotel meals, food quality and presentation, compliance with all safety and sanitation standards and regulation, team member productivity and performance, implementation of policies and procedures, cost controls and overall profitability
- Create and implement menu selections for special banquet themes and events based on current food trends and regional tastes in partnership with the Executive Chef and Banquet Chef, as needed
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, local and company health, safety, sanitation and alcohol awareness standards
- Assist in monitoring and developing team member performance to include, but not limited to, providing supervision, conducting counselling and assisting with evaluations, training, scheduling and assigning work and delivering recognition and reward
- The starting pay is $21.00 per hour
