POSITION TITLE: Legal Aid/Paralegal

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Certified Meet and Confer

REPORTS TO: Chief Compliance Officer

Are you a driven, detail-oriented paralegal or legal assistant seeking a new opportunity? The Office of the Superintendent at CRCSD seeks a dynamic, self-starting individual to join our team and assist with the Compliance Department and the Board of Education. Our ideal candidate will be crucial in providing support throughout all phases of compliance oversight and the board of education process, including creating agendas, resolutions, minutes, regulatory items, exhibits, correspondence, briefs, and motions.   • Collects, compiles, and organizes Board of Education documentation for review.

  • Assists with preparing documents for Board action including notices, agendas, resolutions, motions, board packets, appendices, exhibits, and displays.

  • Attends meetings of the School Board, board, compliance, and core operational meetings, taking notes and assisting personnel as needed.

  • Serves as the Board Secretary, including custodial duty for official documents.

  • Responds to requests for information and documentation including records in consultation with Compliance Officer and Chief of Staff where appropriate.

  • Researches factual and legal issues using in-house files and outside reference sources, such as laws, regulations, legal opinions, court decisions, and articles.

  • Assists with preparing, filing, and servicing contracts and administrative/regulatory and other reports.

  • Screens matters coming to the Chief Compliance Officer to determine urgency, anticipates what resources and information the Chief Compliance Officer will need, and identifies other departments that should be and/or have been involved.

  • Acts as a liaison between all parties to schedule and share information.

  • Organizes and manages documents, including the creation of spreadsheets and retrieval systems.

  • Coordinates document collection, review, production, dissemination, file storage/retrieval, and publication.

  • Creates minutes, transcripts, and exhibits associated with meetings of bodies other than the School Board and Core Operational Committees.

  • Compiles information and prepares statistics, charts, graphs, and other summaries of detail from findings of various bodies or individuals.

  • Uses electronic mail, software, and databases to assist in all Office of the Superintendent aspects.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS/APTITUDES

  • Strong research, investigative, and reporting skills are required.

  • Strong knowledge of compliance and regulatory laws relevant to our District.

  • Proficiency in compliance tools [Qualityze, Resolver, StandardFusion, etc.].

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with superb attention to detail and a problem-solving attitude

  • Commitment to contribute to the education, safety, and security of all Cedar Rapids Community School District students and staff.

  • Ability to relate to others positively and professionally.

EDUCATION, LICENSE and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate's Degree and Paralegal Certificate from an accredited program that the American Bar Association recognizes required.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

SALARY: $50,000 - $55,000

The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 0 to 12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet, such as curriculum materials, desks, chairs, and boxes. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. The position requires the commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. workday. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the classroom including in/at desks, on or near the floor, standing, in movement while supervising indoor and outdoor activities, etc. The employee will usually work in indoor temperatures but will work outdoors when supervising students outside of the classroom.
