We are seeking a highly motivated student engineer to join the mechanical engineering design team within Mission Systems Communication Products Engineering. This position offers the opportunity to expand the student's knowledge and skills of all phases of mechanical packaging of electronics design and development for communication and data link products used in ground, shipboard and airborne applications. This position not only supports design engineers, but also plays a key role in supporting factory, field, and customer related issues.

Immerse yourself in a full-time, Monday-Friday co-op session, that will run June-December 2025 (including the Fall semester; it is expected students will take a semester off from coursework to fully engage with this working mentorship opportunity.

Candidates must also be motivated to learn new technologies, a strong team player, and contribute to a positive work environment.

What You Will Do:

  • Creation and modification of mechanical design artifacts (models, drawings).

  • Support prototype build and verification and pre-qualification testing within a cross functional team.

  • Design and analysis tasks include enclosure structural design with thermal, vibration, other environmental considerations.

  • Perform tolerance analysis in support of design development

  • Support circuit card layout.

  • Follow all appropriate design, safety, and qualification standards in development program.

  • Ability to effectively communicate in a professional manner and produce detailed, clear and concise technical documentation.

What You Will Learn:

  • Learn about applied research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

  • Learn test models of alternate designs and processing methods to assess operating condition effects. Produce parts, designs, or sketches for machines, components, systems or work orders / purchase requests .

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelor's or advanced degree in an applicable discipline.

  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee) or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Experience with Unigraphics NX or similar CAD tools

  • Exposure to and/or working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)

  • Experience with mechanical fabrication methods

  • Ability to utilize engineering drawings and follow written/verbal instructions

    Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance employees, as they are essential to the development of our products. Must be a commutable distance to Cedar Rapids, IA to work an onsite schedule. This position may be eligible for relocation.

The salary range for this role is 37,000 USD - 82,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
