Job Description:

Job Title: Service Person

Department: Traffic

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function:

Inspects, diagnoses and performs preventative maintenance on tractors and trailers.

Reporting Relations:

Accountable and Reports to: Director, Truck Shop; Assistant Truck Shop Manager

Positions that Report to you: None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs oil changes, greases jobs, transmission, differential service and minor repairs. 50%

  • Inspects vehicles and writes up worn or broken parts such as starters, alternators, clutches, brakes; u joints and king pins. Tests electrical and mechanical systems to ensure everything is in working order. 30%

  • Maintains accurate record of work performed and parts used. 10%

  • Repairs lights, replaces belts and hoses. 10%

  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities: (These are considered occasional in nature)

  • Performs minor repairs to building and services equipment.

  • Responds to service calls on the road to repair breakdowns.

  • Performs tire work on equipment.

  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:

  • Must be able to solve practical problems; several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Must be able to do Arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.

  • Must be able to interpret written work instructions; understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions; write identifying information; request supplies orally or in writing.

Education and Experience:

High school or equivalent experience. Courses or technical certification in truck maintenance helpful. Valid CDL license required.

Zero to one year of similar or related experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to perform very heavy work: exerting up to 20-50 pounds of force occasionally, 10-25 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Visual requirements include vision from 20 inches or less to 20 feet or more with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.

  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions:

The duties of this position are performed in a repair shop setting. There is exposure to dirt, noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, dangerous chemical or solvents, and electrical shock. There may be occasional travel and over time required.

Equipment Used to Perform Job:

Standard tools and equipment used for truck maintenance and repair including welders, electronic analyzers and battery testers. Performs data entry of job orders and parts used on computed inventory system. Must have own hand tools.

Financial Responsibility:

$20,000.00 or more if service is done incorrectly or they miss catching a defective steering part.
