CHEROKEE COUNTY Deputy Sheriff in Cherokee, Iowa

CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION CHEROKEE COUNTY, IOWA APPLICATIONS FOR ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS FOR THE POSITION OF DEPUTY SHERIFF for Cherokee County may be obtained from Cherokee County Sheriff's Office or Cherokee County Clerk of Court office. Application packets will be available, Wednesday, September 10, 2024. Requests may be made via phone, mail, fax, e-mail or at the office of the Cherokee County Sheriffs office or the Cherokee County Clerk of Court during normal business hours.

General Qualifications Applicant must be citizen of the United States. Must be able to speak, read and write the English language. Applicants must be between the ages of eighteen and sixty. APPLICANTS MUST FURNISH: Current Driver's License, birth certificate, military discharge papers, high school diploma (or equivalency). All applicants will be subject to a background check. Written, physical, drug and psychological tests are required, however, lateral moves for current certified law enforcement officers may be considered per Iowa Law. Overview: The Deputy Sheriff is a vital role in our law enforcement agency, responsible for upholding the law and maintaining public safety. This position requires an individual with strong leadership skills, a commitment to justice, and the ability to effectively communicate with the community. As a Deputy Sheriff, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety of citizens and enforcing the law in a fair and impartial manner. Responsibilities: - Conduct investigations and gather evidence to support criminal charges. - Patrol assigned areas to prevent and respond to crimes. - Serve warrants and make arrests when necessary. - Provide first aid and emergency assistance as needed. - Conduct searches and seizures to gather evidence. - Write reports and maintain accurate records. - Manage conflicts and take steps to prevent escalation. - Conduct interviews with witnesses and suspects. - Assist in the prevention and detection of crimes, such as theft, fraud, and drug-related offenses. - Maintain knowledge of local laws and regulations, including immigration law. - Work closely with other law enforcement agencies and departments. - Perform other duties as assigned by the Sheriff. Experience: - A certificate in law enforcement or a related field is preferred. - Prior experience in law enforcement or a related field is required. - Experience in criminal investigation is an asset. - Ability to drive a vehicle safely and responsibly is essential. - Experience in conflict management and first aid is desirable. - Report writing skills are necessary. - Experience in loss prevention is a plus. - Experience in militarized law enforcement is considered an asset. - Familiarity with immigration law is beneficial.
