Position Purpose

The Unit Secretary/Nurse Assistant is a member of MercyOne Medical Center-Clinton’s healthcare team and is under the direct supervision of a registered professional nurse providing quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care by assisting the patient with activities of daily living, as well as, other physical, emotional and spiritual needs consistent with the mission of MercyOne Clinton, vision of patient care services, evidence-based standard of care and established policies and procedures. As a Unit Secretary performs clerical and receptionist duties under the direction and supervision of the Unit Director. The Unit Secretary transcribes selected physician orders, performs order entry on the computer, schedules diagnostic tests and therapies for patients, assembles admission and discharge charts and maintains patient medical records, completes documentation for billing, answers telephone calls, provides routine approved information via telephone and in person and relays other calls and messages to appropriate staff. The Unit Secretary demonstrates professional behavior consistent with the mission of MercyOne Clinton, the Vision of Patient Care Services, evidence-based standards of care and established policies and procedures.

What You Will Do

  • Under the supervision of an RN, assists with the provision of patient care and other delegated nursing activities.

  • Utilizes observation, interpersonal and communication skills to identify changes in patient status that should be reported to the RN.

  • Coordinates the scheduling of various tests. Arranges transportation for patients.

  • Prepares, compiles, maintains and processes the patient records.

  • Orders and maintains inventory of forms and supplies used for the unit.

  • Assists with the documentation of such parameters as vital signs and intake and output utilizing the appropriate medical record.

  • Demonstrate a caring practice by respecting the rights of an individual or group.

  • Demonstrate skills as an effective team member.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certified Nurse Aide, verification of certification from the State of Iowa

  • High school education or equivalent required.

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a related field preferred.

  • Must be able to work concurrently on a variant of tasks in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles.

  • Must be able to set and organize own work priorities and adapt to them as they change.

  • Must be BLS certified within 3 months of hire.

  • Excellent communication skills are required to communicate with various disciplines.

  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology.

  • Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission and vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health.
