Description
The Driver Education Behind-the-Wheel instructor will teach the BTW practicum component of Iowa Western Community College’s High School Drivers Education class. Lessons include teaching topics such as safe lane changes, passing techniques, rural and interstate driving, road sign identification, merging, parallel and angle parking, and emergency standards. Each student requires 12 hours of driving experience. Summer drive sessions typically are offered in 2-hour increments, scheduled Monday-Friday, with driving times scheduled between 8-5. However, this part-time position requires scheduling flexibility. Hours vary during the school year to include after-school and weekend hours (including Sundays).
Qualifications
To be eligible, candidate must complete an “Behind the Wheel” online class and complete a Department of Transportation application.
The ability to pass a background check and a clean driving record is required.
Police officers (current or retired) are exempt from completing the behind-the-wheel instructor training program
Physical Demands
This position demands the ability to sit in a car for long periods. The ability to get in and out of an automobile several times a day, react quickly to emergencies and properly use the instructor brake.
Ability to occasionally lift 10 pounds, ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, use hands to operate computer keyboard, telephone, and other basic office equipment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, and use a phone. Some travel, by vehicle, may be required. High level of social interaction skills, reasoning/analysis, and ability to work with minimal supervision, high degree of problem-solving, organizational skills with the teaching and learning process, and high level of inter-personal skills is preferred.
