Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD)www.iowaschoolforthedeaf.orgis located on a 115 acre campus located on the southern edge of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The campus is within 15 minutes of downtown Omaha, Nebraska. ISD serves students from the states of Iowa and Nebraska.

Be part of a highly qualified team providing educational services to Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Administrator responsible for Boys’ and Girls’ Dormitories, Health Center, Transportation, and Food Service Departments.

Primary Function:

The Director of Student Life reports to the Superintendent and is responsible for:

  • Works collaboratively with other administrators to provide a comprehensive student life program.

  • Supports, directs, and provides leadership to dormitory, health center, transportation, and food service managers.

  • Ensures students are safe and have appropriate supervision and programming.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with leadership team to strategize and implement programs for the academic and dormitory programs.

  • Updates and creates policies and guidelines to streamline the operations of the student life department.

  • Prepares and administers departmental budget.

  • Assesses future department needs: staffing, equipment, vehicles, and furniture.

  • Available 24/7 for any issues which may arise.

  • Fosters a positive work environment.

  • Ensures safety and security of department and overall campus.

  • Plans, develops, and implements a robust dormitory program that addresses the ever changing needs of students. Ensures the staff implement activities that teach and promote daily living skills, personal development, social literacy, community involvement, and independent living skills. Incorporates the strategies of PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports); SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and ECC (Expanded Core Curriculum into the daily dorm curriculum.

  • Attends IEPs and meetings regarding student progress and provides feedback and input regarding student issues/progress in the dormitory setting.

  • Regularly communicates with parents.

  • Establishes ongoing professional development opportunities for each Student Life department. Meets with staff on a regular basis.

  • Revies and evaluates the effectiveness of each staff member and coaches for improved performance.

  • Participates in the recruitment and hiring of department employees.

  • Help promote a positive atmosphere in the school.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and experience equal to six years of full-time management-level work in finance, human resources, engineering, law, social work, regulation, data processing, or program research or evaluation.

2) Ten years of full-time management-level work experience in finance, human resources, engineering, law, social work, regulation, data processing, or program research or evaluation.

3) All of the following (a and b):

a. Six years of full-time management-level work experience in finance, human resources, engineering, law, social work, regulation, data processing, or program research or evaluation; and

b. A combination of a total of four years of education and full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience. Graduation from the Iowa Certified Public Manager Program is also equivalent to one year of full-time experience or education.

4) All of the following (a, b, and c):

a. Four years of full-time management-level work experience in finance, human resources, engineering, law, social work, regulation, data processing, or program research or evaluation; and

b. A combination of a total of four years of education and full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience; and

c. A combination of a total of two years of graduate-level education and full-time experience (as described in part a), where twenty-four semester hours of accredited graduate college or university course work in a public-service-related area (e.g., public or business administration, social work, law, education, engineering) equals one year of full-time experience. Graduation from the Iowa Certified Public Manager Program is also equivalent to one year of full-time experience or education.

5) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Public Service Manager 1 or comparable specific management-level position.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must possess the ability to reach the level of sign language proficiency designated for the position within the time frame established by the School's Sign Language Policy.

  • Experience working with Deaf people, preferably youth and/or in a school environment.

  • Residential experience.
