Description
The Peer Support Mentor position will support student learning by providing non-academic supports to a student for two class. This is not a tutoring position. Qualified individuals will not need to be familiar with class content and will not assist the student with completing class work. Upon hiring, the Peer Support Mentor will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement. This position may be filled with two individuals.
Job Duties
The Peer Support Mentor will be responsible for assisting the student with the following:
Notetaking
Writing down directions for assignments/test that are announced in class
Redirect student if delayed/still working on previous task
Repeat verbal multi-step instructions given in class
Prompt student to speak up in class if there is a question/concern
Stays after class a maximum of 10 minutes to transcribe answers to clarifying questions student may have
Qualifications
A cumulative GPA of 3.0
Strong academic skills such as time management, note taking, and active listening
The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
A strong desire to help fellow IWCC students
Comfort working with a culturally diverse population and students with different needs
Ability to follow established procedures, particularly those related to confidentiality within the mentoring relationship
A schedule that allows for consistent attendance on Monday/Wednesday from 11:00 am-12:50 pm and Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 10:00 am-10:50 am
Physical Demands
Requires prolonged sitting.
May require extensive writing on occasion.
