Job Description

The Seventh Judicial District has an immediate opening for a Judicial Specialist 2 to join our team in the Scott County office in Davenport, Iowa. An internal candidate may be hired at his or her current classification, e.g. Judicial Specialist 3 or 4.

The starting salary for new State employees is expected to be at the base of the pay range. The starting pay for this position is $18.59 – 26.41/hour or $1487.20 - $2112.80/bi-weekly based on an 80-hour pay period.

Hours:Monday – Friday 8:00A – 4:30P

Key Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the District Court Administrator or designee, this position provides important customer service, clerical, paralegal and/or administrative assistance for the efficient operation of the courts. Performs a variety of tasks supporting the efficient operations of a high-volume court, maintains court schedules, arranges court interpreter services and assists court users. Performs related work as directed by the District Court Administrator or designee. The following are examples of major job duties expected for this position to perform:

  • Schedule court proceedings with attorneys, self-represented parties and judicial officers.

  • Draft and file routine scheduling orders.

  • Provide court users with accurate procedural information.

  • Direct court filings to judicial officers using a case management system.

  • Performs clerical duties for the assigned judicial officer, which includes orders, correspondence and other court-related documents.

  • Assist judicial officers inside and outside of the courtroom.

  • Assists judges by securing witnesses, opening court, organizing and listing exhibits, maintaining court decorum; provides assistance for jurors; works closely with judges, attorneys, jurors and the general public.

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of structured clerical/secretarial tasks supporting the efficient operation of a high-volume court; performs other clerical work as required.

Although the position is primarily assigned to the Scott County courthouse in Davenport, occasional travel may be required anywhere within the Seventh Judicial District (courthouses in Clinton, Davenport, Maquoketa, Muscatine and Tipton).

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Judicial Branch. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school (or High School Equivalency) and two (2) years of successful completion of accredited post high school education in business, paralegal, computer, legal assistant or related program.

  • Two (2) years of professional office experience in business, court or legal work or a related area with one (1) year of the experience involving customer service. At the discretion of the appointing authority additional years of experience may be substituted for the required post high school education.

Or, the successful completion of additional years of education (i.e., Bachelor’s Degree) may be substituted for years of experience on the basis that successful completion of thirty (30) semester hours or academic equivalent equals one year of experience. Education cannot be substituted for customer service experience.
