Job Summary:

Drake University seeks a strategic human resource professional to serve as a campus leader in the role of Executive Director, Human Resources. This position leads the University’s human resources department and serves as a trusted advisor to campus leadership, managers, faculty, and staff. The Executive Director is responsible for managing complex employment, compensation, and benefits matters, while ensuring a responsive and collaborative Human Resources function in service to campus constituents. This position directly affects institutional excellence by fostering individual commitment to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive community.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree

7 years relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree or J.D.

Professional HR Certification (SPHR or SHRM-SCP)

An advanced understanding of applicable laws and regulations impacting the Human Resources function

Experience with employee benefit plan design and compliance

Strong operational skills with an emphasis on creating efficiencies, standardization, and leveraging technology to improve HR processes

Ability to manage complex employment matters

Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate ideas, influence others, and build alignment across all levels of the institution

Job Duties:

20% - Leads the Human Resources department, promoting teamwork, integrity, high quality customer service, continuous process improvement, and collaborative problem-solving. Creates efficiencies, standardization, and leverages technology to improve HR processes. Ensures the development and implementation of a departmental continuous improvement plan. Manages the departmental budget and related administrative functions. - (Essential)

20% - Advises senior leadership and managers on human resource related matters, including talent acquisition, workforce planning, employee engagement, performance management, employee relations, and legal and regulatory compliance. Leads and promotes university equity and inclusion initiatives and programs within areas of responsibility. - (Essential)

20% - Responsible for compensation, employee benefits, and wellness programs. Oversees relationships with insurance companies, third party consultants and attorneys to advance comprehensive and compliant employee benefit programs. Oversees and manages workers compensation benefits, claims, and evaluates workers compensation insurance carriers. - (Essential)

15% - Develops, audit, and refine employment policies and practices to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations across all Human Resource functions. Oversee employee relations, ensuring fair and consistent application of policies and procedures, while helping to ensure appropriate accountabilities and evaluation systems. Conducts and/or oversees workplace investigations. - (Essential)

15% - Oversees and coordinates the recruitment and onboarding processes for staff and faculty positions. Coordinates the international visa and green card process. Ensures recruitment and onboarding processes are efficient and appropriately supported by technology and human resource information systems. - (Essential)

5% - Ensures the delivery of effective performance management and professional development programs. Conducts and facilitates supervisory training. - (Essential)

5% - Creates, executes, and evaluates strategic, innovative and engaging HR communications and materials. Communicates through a variety of mediums about the plans, successes, and programs of the Human Resources Department. Participates in University initiatives and committees. - (Essential)
