Job Summary:

Drake University Head Start is seeking energetic candidates to join our team of classroom staff and carry out the Head Start and Early Head Start Mission to “better prepare young children and their families for life experiences now and in the future.”

We are hiring a Lead Substitute Associate who is excited to contribute to a team of dedicated and supportive staff. This is a full time, 12-month, benefits eligible position supporting our teaching programs in daily classroom activities.

The ideal candidate will take pride in serving the families of our community, be prepared to travel to multiple sites (receiving mileage reimbursement), and capable of adjusting to different classroom settings. We are seeking a candidate who enjoys collaborating with colleagues and educating preschool age children.

The person selected for this role will be responsible for assigning substitutes and Floating TAs to classrooms in need of coverage. Spreadsheet management, time management, cell phone responsiveness, and attention to detail are very important in this role. Duties also consist of light cooking and working directly with children as substituting in classrooms will also be expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School diploma

• Ability to obtain Preschool CDA (Child Development Associate) credential certification within two years of hire,

• Valid drivers license, meeting the insurability requirements to drive on behalf of the university. Access to reliable transportation to get to and from your work site daily.

• Proficient with technology and spreadsheet management

Job Duties:

  • 25% - Manage substitute placement documentation & communication. Field calls and voicemails received on the substitute phone line, and review absence request notifications to track classroom staff absences. Assign available substitutes and floating TAs to fill in for absent teachers and TAs. - (Essential)

  • 25% - Communication: Develop and maintain good communication while respecting confidentiality. Contact available substitutes and floaters to assign available substitutes and floating TAs to fill in for absent teachers, Home Visitors, and TAs. Contact meal service provider and Nutrition team to make appropriate adjustments for classroom closures. Manage teaching staff attendance and absentee email communication, maintain professional rapport with classroom staff, substitutes, and members of the leadership team to provide pertinent and relevant information about classroom staff – substitute TA relations pertaining to location preference, skill, capability, and performance. - (Essential)

  • 25% - Support various lead teachers by filling in for absences or as an additional staff member in the classroom as last assigned classroom substitute needed for last minute absences. Foster a developmentally appropriate environment based on individual needs of children where they are comfortable enough to verbalize feelings, question, explore, experiment, and problem solve. Supervise children in non-classroom settings such as indoor large motor activities, playground, outings away from the classroom and arrival and dismissal with families, etc. Prepare breakfast, lunch, snack, beverages, and any required recipes by following proper and safe food preparation methods. Help children during their daily bathroom routine by offering direction and support when needed, including the changing of diapers and pull-ups. Participate in snack/meal activities by assisting staff with serving food, eating with children, and cleaning up after meals. - (Essential)

  • 15% - Documentation, Records, & Compliance Keep track of requested teaching staff absences, classroom closures, and substitute assignments on a digital spreadsheet. Assist staff with documentation and observation of children while ensuring confidentiality of all documents maintained in the department. Assist in creating and maintaining accurate confidential records within applicable regulations and performance standards. Prepare and maintain all necessary paperwork and records according to CACFP guidelines. - (Essential)

  • 5% - Professional Development & Role expectations Maintain an organized classroom, cleaning up after each activity and assisting staff with the special needs of the center. Continue professional growth by attending classes and workshops, reading new materials and contributing resource ideas to programs. Travel for business purposes within Head Start service area.   • 5% - Federal Head Start Program Performance Standards, state and local regulations, rules and requirements compliance. Maintain strict confidentiality of all records and documents. Maintain department records and reports in a secure manner. Represent Drake University and Drake University Head Start in a professional manner.
