Independently leads the clinical quality management activities of the Medical Staff; activities associated with FPPE (Focused Professional Practice Evaluation), OPPE (Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation) peer review, and assists in quality initiatives as related to the Medical Staff. Leads Mercy’s External Peer Review program and services. Collects, validates, and analyzes outcome and process variance data in support of patient safety and quality of care initiatives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Independently leads and organizes all the clinical quality improvement activities (peer review, M&M, MMI) for all clinical departments of the Medical Staff in collaboration with the department chair, vice-chair, and/or quality chair.

  • Conducts retrospective review of medical records for quality and safety activities, including initiatives requested by CMS, TJC, CHI, MHN, and Mercy Medical Center.

  • Organizes and facilities peer review committees.

  • Organizes the Clinical Services Council (CSC) meetings with the Chair of Clinical Services Council. The CSC is the quality committee that oversees all medical staff quality and reports directly to the Medical Executive Committee.

  • Ensures FPPE (Focused Professional Practice Evaluation) occurs on all newly appointed medical staff members as well as when a concern regarding quality arises as per the Joint Commission standards.

  • Organizes OPPE (Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation) as required by the Joint Commission standards.

  • Responsible for oversight of the network’s External Peer Review program per contracted agreements with affiliate hospitals.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

  • Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.

  • BSN preferred.

  • Five years clinical nursing experience required.

  • Basic understanding of performance improvement principles, data sampling, data collection, data analysis, and hospitalization procedures and practices relating to patient care and utilization of hospital services.

  • Skills in establishing and maintaining harmonious working relationships with the medical staff and hospital personnel; expressing one’s self effectively and tactfully, orally and in writing; working independently in analyzing facts, exercising sound judgment and arriving at conclusions.

  • Basic understanding of computer application requested. Advanced skills in use of software, excel spreadsheets, databases are preferred.
