Summary:

The Iowa Judicial Branch is seeking Appellate Court Staff Attorney candidates with superior legal research skills, exceptional writing and editing abilities, and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously. The selected candidate will work with the Iowa Court of Appeals. Anticipated start date in late September.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with assigned judge or judges in analyzing legal issues raised on appeal.

  • Perform extensive research of statutes, case law, regulations, and other legal texts.

  • Perform a comprehensive review of the trial court record for resolution of appeals.

  • Draft proposed opinions or memoranda for review by the assigned judge.

  • Draft opinion summaries.

  • Edit and review opinions and opinion summaries from the Iowa Court of Appeals before filing to ensure accuracy and consistency.

  • Read and stay apprised of current rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court and Iowa Supreme Court and their potential effect on pending cases before the Iowa Court of Appeals.

  • Assist with administrative and operational duties as assigned, including scheduling virtual and out-of-town arguments.

  • Assist assigned judge with monitoring case flow and processing.

  • Help with interviewing and hiring prospective law clerks and summer clerks.

  • Assist in training and monitoring law clerks and externs.

  • Prepare and present continuing legal education programs and case law updates.

This is a non-merit position. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in Iowa.

• Experience equal to two years of full-time work in the practice of law, which can include experience as a law clerk.

The successful candidate may be eligible to be hired at the higher levels within the Staff Attorney classification series.

• Knowledge of Iowa law and of the organization, functions, and responsibilities of the courts.

• Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and practices of conducting legal research, including electronic research tools.

• Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines on a consistent basis.

• Ability to formulate and express ideas in writing or orally on complex technical and legal subjects.

• Ability to work with confidential information on a regular basis.

• Ability to treat co-workers, court users, participants, and members of the public courteously and impartially regardless of race, color, sex, age, gender identity, gender preference, national origin, religion, disability, or socio-economic status.

• Ability to understand and interpret state and federal law, case law, court rules, administrative rules and directives, and legislative documents.
