Principal Financial Group Director of Portfolio Management in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

As a Strategy Execution Leader at Principal Financial Group, you will have the unique opportunity to lead a portfolio management team, driving business initiative execution, and optimizing the portfolio of work to maximize value and impact. In this role, you will lead the team responsible for working with senior leaders, strategy, finance, and IT, to prioritize and allocate resources, ultimately helping to successfully implement our key initiatives propelling our business growth!

Responsibilities

  • Lead the portfolio management functions for the insurance business unit, ensuring the effective execution of portfolios and programs aligned with the business unit strategic priorities.

  • Develop and implement portfolio management strategies, frameworks, and processes to prioritize work and allocate resources effectively.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to define portfolio objectives, success criteria, and performance metrics., Work with leaders to influence outcomes, address conflict and ensure alignment with business objectives.

  • Understand and continuously improve the performance of portfolios by measuring and analyzing cross-portfolio needs. Apply insights gained to streamline decision making, dependency management, reporting, and value delivery. Facilitate resource management discussions based on business priorities.

  • Guide, support, and coach the team through promoting ongoing team development. Lead the application of knowledge, skills, processes, tools, and techniques to meet or exceed the needs and expectations of the business. Educate and influence others on appropriate methodologies. Display leadership, organizational awareness, and collaborate with leaders for successful outcomes.

  • Identify, communicate, and manage required changes to the portfolio, providing proper reinforcement for success. Balance competing demands to achieve desired outcomes.

  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration across teams and stakeholders to ensure project alignment and stakeholder engagement.

  • Collaborate across the enterprise to ensure resources are allocated to key initiatives, not only in the insurance business unit, but collectively across the entire enterprise portfolio.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent

  • 10 years of experience with a strong background in managing portfolios, programs, and projects; implementing initiatives, or developing strategic plans including prior leadership experience

  • Proven experience in managing full life cycle, cross-enterprise business programs and initiatives of varying budget sizes and scopes

  • Ability to interact with integrity and a high level of professionalism across all levels of the business and with technology and enterprise partners

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Effective in leading both virtual and local teams

  • Strong influencing skills and ability to build partnerships to achieve desired outcomes

  • Ability to establish strategy, execution, and risk management controls for programs

  • Proven negotiating skills and ability to manage problems to positive resolution

  • Motivated individual who is adaptable, diligent, proactive, and attentive to detail

  • Powerful communicator who reflects professional presence and is confident in interactions with clients and business partners

  • Proactive and independent team member who effectively manages task prioritization and embraces new challenges.

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$137000 - $185000 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.
