What You'll Do

As an Underwriting Consultant within our Individual Life New Business team, you will get the opportunity to support marketing goals by issuing life insurance coverage on a favorable and timely basis consistent with mortality/morbidity objectives. Support profitability goals by assessing the expected mortality/morbidity of individual life applicants by analyzing medical, non-medical, and financial information and classifying risk appropriately. If acting within a brokerage agency underwriting capacity, may need to negotiate offers for placement of policies with the appropriate carrier. This may include acting as a partner to sales managers and producers to arrive at the best solution for a proposed insured.

  • Evaluate applicants consistent with the company's risk appraisal standards. Analyze higher face amount cases with complex medical, non-medical, and financial underwriting issues. Effectively underwrite business for our top producers. Utilize sound underwriting judgment which enhances ability to place a case, promote product competitiveness, and achieve mortality/morbidity objectives. Develop creative approaches which lead to placing business with the company.

  • Support the sales process by working in partnership with producers, field office staff, and field officers during the presale, underwriting, and policy issue and delivery processes. Establish effective working relationships. Proactively anticipate, address, and communicate case issues. Understand the producer's role and appreciate the submission of the business. Negotiate satisfactory outcomes for customers, producers, and the company that are fair to parties involved and utilize sound risk selection principles.

  • Promote underwriting expertise to producers, field managers, and home office staff. Educate field managers and producers about the underwriting process. Actively participate in the development of less experienced underwriters by advising, counseling, and coaching them in formal mentor relationships.

  • Establish an area of underwriting expertise. (Examples: advanced medical underwriting, advanced financial underwriting, business insurance solutions, estate planning or product knowledge.)

  • Perform administrative functions as appropriate in expediting case processing and ensure compliance with complex, changing federal and state regulations and legislation. Review suitability of variable products following NASD and SEC rules and policies applicable to insurance sales. Provide clear file documentation and instructions for accurate issuance of policies.

  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as required. Lead underwriting projects that contribute to overall competitiveness of the company and help maintain the underwriting function as the industry leader in risk classification.

  • If working with variable products, must become an associated person of Principal Securities, Inc., which requires fingerprinting, and a full background check.
