POSITION PURPOSE:

Consistent with the American Nurses Association Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators (White Paper, January 2003) and the Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development (2000), the director of clinical and professional development is a member of the Mercy Medical Center leadership team and is accountable for advancing and maintaining nurse competence, enhancing professional nursing practice, and supporting achievement of career goals, building on the educational and experiential bases of nurses across the novice to expert continuum for the ultimate objective of ensuring delivery of efficient, effective, safe, quality, and compassionate patient care. He/she cultivates an environment that promotes an appetite for lifelong learning by supporting the development of effective, quality, innovative, creative, and fun continuing education activities. He/she supports a shared leadership philosophy and advances the professional practice model for patient care services.

The manager of clinical and professional development ensures an effective educational structure, inclusive decision-making, and creative and supportive personnel policies, professional models of care that promote excellent patient services, collegial interdisciplinary relationships, and professional development opportunities for nursing staff. The manager of clinical and professional development facilitates interactive management and the development of strong relationships among nursing personnel and with others throughout the organization and the community, promoting a professional environment consistent with magnet hospitals.

The clinical manager is accountable for the environment in which clinical nursing is practiced. He/she enhances the practice environment, consistent with Magnet Hospital criteria, encouraging staff accountability for their own practice, and recruiting and retaining employees with appropriate values, experience, education, and background. The clinical director is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of the defined service area(s) and collaborates with the nurse executive and others in organizational planning, innovation, and evaluation.

What you will do:

  • Participates in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making involving staff.

  • Coordinates nursing care with other healthcare disciplines and assists in integrating services across the continuum of health care.

  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel, including staff members representative of the population diversity as possible.

  • Participates and involves the nursing staff in evaluative research activities and assures evidence-based practice.

  • Provides and/or facilitates educational experiences for nursing and other students.

  • Ensures accountability for professional practice in defined clinical service areas consistent with the ANA Standards of Professional Performance.

  • Participates in the development of innovative clinical and professional improvement initiatives in areas of accountability, across the nursing organization and within MercyOne Medical Center as a whole.

  • Serves as a professional role model and mentor to nursing staff.

  • Upholds the customer service standards in defined clinical service areas, assuring that patients, families, and all customers are treated in a manner consistent with MercyOne Medical Center’s Mission and Values.

  • Assures nurse participation in shared governance in defined area of service.

What we are looking for:

The manager of clinical and professional development must hold an active license to practice nursing in the state of Iowa and maintain continuing education units per the state of Iowa licensure requirements. A minimum of a master’s degree in nursing is required. Certification by a nationally recognized nursing organization in nursing administration and an appropriate specialty area is recommended, as is membership in an appropriate professional nursing organization.
