POSITION PURPOSE:

The registered respiratory therapist is responsible for providing basic and advanced Respiratory Care services to neonatal, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients in a manner that is consistent with the philosophy, objectives, standards of care, and procedures of Respiratory Care Services. The registered respiratory therapist plans, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of Respiratory Care. In addition, the registered respiratory therapist is expected to serve as a resource to physicians, peers, and customers and participate in orientation, in-service education, departmental quality assurance activities, and staff leadership roles within Respiratory Care Services. The registered respiratory therapist assumes direction for Respiratory Care activities in absence of the Respiratory Care Director/Coordinator.

What you will do:

  • Consults with and assists physicians and nurses with respiratory care plan for patients and facilitates the implementation of physician orders.

  • Assess patients and evaluates appropriateness and quality of respiratory care of individual patients for the purpose of making necessary modifications and adjustments of care plan and equipment use.

  • Reviews, collects, and evaluates relevant clinical data.

  • Communicates changes in the respiratory care plan with other healthcare team members.

  • Provides effective education to patients, students, co-workers, and other members of the healthcare team as appropriate.

  • Participates in orientation of new staff members.

  • Performs both fundamental and advanced diagnostic procedures including oximetry measurement, capnography, arterial puncture, mechanical ventilation waveform analysis, and pulmonary function testing.

  • Performs emergency and acute respiratory care procedures in accordance with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, and departmental and hospital policies and procedures.

  • Actively participates in departmental quality assurance and hospital-wide organizational performance improvement activities.

  • Maintains clinical and professional competency based upon established standards of practice.

  • Responsible for assembling, checking, cleaning, and correcting malfunctions on respiratory care equipment including, but not limited to mechanical ventilators, CPAP generators, non-invasive positive pressure ventilation devices, oxygen administration equipment, positive pressure breathing machines, aerosol delivery devices, and diagnostic equipment.

  • Responds to emergency situations and assumes responsibility for airway management and ventilation and performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

  • Delivers and assesses efficacy of medicated aerosol therapy and oxygen therapy.

  • Performs pulmonary hygiene, including airway care, suctioning, and chest physiotherapy.

  • Documents in the patient’s medical record and completes required departmental documentation.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.

  • Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

What we are looking for:

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy Program.

  • Must be registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care or within six months of hire.

  • Must be licensed as an RCP in the State of Iowa.

  • Experience in another health care setting desirable, with critical care experience preferred.

  • Maintain current BLS, NRP, and Mandatory Reporter certification.

  • Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 5 years thereafter.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to exercise professional judgment in dealing with patients, physicians, and other healthcare team members.

  • Must be competent and thorough in performing job functions to all age groups.

  • Must display satisfactory customer relation skills consistent with Mercy mission, values, and expectations.

  • Must display behavior consistent with Respiratory Care Services Citizenship Standards.

  • Must effectively utilize verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must be able to organize, prioritize, and function in an environment with multiple stress factors.

  • Must be able to use a computer for documentation and other relevant activities.

  • Assigned hours within your shift, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on the changing needs of the department and/or the organization.
