JOB TITLE: Marion Transition Center Associate/Job Coach

REPORTS TO: Transition Center Coordinator/High School Principal

BASIC FUNCTION: A job coach provides educational services in the work environment for students with disabilities. Instruction is provided in the community and work setting which allows the student increased opportunities to learn prosocial employability skills and behaviors. Because of the importance in the overall success of a student’s work experience, it is imperative that this employee demonstrate professionalism in daily activities. This position will be setting an example for the student on the proper way to dress, behave, and interact in the workplace. There are numerous areas to be conscious of when performing as a job coach/associate.

EVALUATION: The High School Principal in collaboration with the Transition Center Coordinator will evaluate on an annual basis

JOB SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a school setting (preferred)

  • Experience working with people with disabilities (preferred)

  • Holds a valid Iowa Driver’s license with no restrictions

  • Pass a criminal background check

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coaching and supporting students across community, classroom and vocational settings

  • Facilitate communication with employers, transition coordinator and students as appropriate.

  • Serve as a link between the transition center and community or work site setting.

  • Collect and record data about student performance.

  • Expected to independently “troubleshoot” problems that may arise in any setting such as task troubles, production problems, relationships with others, boredom, frustration, etc.

  • Model appropriate behaviors, social interactions

  • Establish positive communication and relationships with staff, students, and employers.

  • Complete documentation timely and accurately.

  • Attend training seminars, in-service sessions, and staff meetings.

  • Always represents MISD in a positive and professional manner to all members, co-workers, interdisciplinary teams, and the general public.

  • Performs other additional duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Follow district policies for protecting the health, safety, and well-being of students.

  • Communicate with your Transition Center Program Coordinator on a systematic and consistent basis, including problems and concerns.

  • Become familiar with the goals and objectives in the individual student’s IEP and carry out activities to support these goals and objectives as assigned.

  • Maintain confidentiality. Communication about student progress or concerns about a student should not be shared with parents or anyone else unless directed to do so by the coordinator/teacher.

  • Be punctual especially when working with students in the workplace

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects, tools or controls; talk and hear.

  • The employee must be able to squat, bend, use stairs, stoop or kneel, lift, reach above the head and forward.

  • The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, driving, etc.

The noise level in the work environment can vary based on activities taking place. The position requires the

commitment of professional working hours that may require the employee to extend beyond a typical eight

hour workday.
