Jasper County Deputy Sheriff in Newton, Iowa

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office is seeking both certified officers and non-certified applicants to join our law enforcement agency for the position of Deputy Sheriff. Applications are being accepted through June 14, 2024, at 4:00 PM, with testing being conducted on Saturday, June 29, 2024. Qualified "non-certified" candidates are required to pass the physical agility test developed by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and the National Police Officers Selection Test (POST). Iowa Certified Officers are not subject to the physical agility testing but will need to take the P.O.S.T. exam if they do not have test scores on file within one year of testing date, applicants with a P.O.S.T. exam score on file within one year of testing date may use that test score if they choose.

Current union pay scale: $28.56 to $37.54 per hour (pay scale effective 7/1/24). Additional compensation for longevity and shift differential, special duties or assignments.

The Jasper County Civil Service Commission will be conducting testing promptly at 7:30 AM on June 29, 2024, at the Jasper County Armory Annex Building located at 1030 W. 2nd St. S. in Newton, Iowa. Physical agility, written exam and oral interviews will be conducted on the same day to all individuals receiving the minimal qualifying test scores. There will be a $25.00 fee for the written P.O.S.T. exam. Payment will be required prior to taking the exam. The Jasper County Civil Service Application consists of 17 pages, to include various medical releases and written out responses. Applications must be completed in their entirety and returned to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office no later than 4:00 PM on Friday, June 14, 2024, to be eligible for the testing process. Medical releases must be signed by the appropriate physician, optometrist and audiologist prior to being allowed to participate in the testing.

Iowa certified officers who successfully complete the Civil Service testing will be considered for a lateral entry position which can include a higher starting wage and additional benefits. Lateral entry position offers to include a $5,000.00 bonus upon successful completion of the field training program.

Job Summary: Within an established chain of command on an assigned shift, enforces controlling federal/state statutes and County ordinances designed to protect life and property within County boundaries; operates motor vehicle during day and night in monitoring events, situations and occurrences which require appropriate law enforcement action; interacts with all kinds of people in providing information, issuing citations, warnings, and arrest warrants, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes.

Additional Qualifications: Must be a U.S. citizen and willing to relocate and reside within Jasper County. Must be age 18 or older, Must possess a valid Iowa driver's license, Must have a high school diploma or GED.
