POSITION TITLE: Head Custodian

DEPARTMENT: Maintenance

REPORTS TO: Director of Buildings & Grounds and Building Principal

Purpose Statement: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop. To ensure that the physical school facility is kept in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety which maintains the value of the community's investment. To direct and coordinate the work of other custodians in the facility in maintaining this high standard of excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School education with advanced schooling preferred.

  • Three (3) years successful experience as a school custodian.

  • Experience in boiler operation, floor maintenance, and other custodial specialties.

  • Must be able to work well with students, staff, parents, and community members.

  • Experience in supervision preferred.

  • Have good health with no physical limitations. Must be able to lift 60 lbs. minimum. Must have ability to climb using scaffolding and ladders.

  • Ability to read and understand basic instructions.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • As applicable, supervises all custodians in the building and ensures that their duties and responsibilities are being fulfilled.

  • As applicable, reports to the Director of Buildings and Grounds if a custodian is not fulfilling his/her duties and responsibilities.

  • As applicable, provides training to all new custodians of the building.

  • Helps in the assignment, scheduling and training of members of the custodial staff.

  • Plans, requests, and oversees all maintenance and repair work for the facility, maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.

  • Maintains an inventory and requests suitable supplies, tools, and equipment to enable staff to complete required work.

  • Inspects the work and guides the performance of the custodial staff on a regular basis. Provides input to the Director for use in the departmental evaluations.

    Custodial Responsibilities :

  • Keeps building and premises including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.

  • Regulates heat, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, if applicable, to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical usage of fuel and electricity.

  • Shovels, plows, and/or sands walks, driveways, parking areas and steps as appropriate.

  • Checks daily to insure that all exit doors are open and all panic devices are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.

  • Raises the United States flag at or before 8:00 a.m. on each school day and lowers it at or after 3:30 p.m.

  • Sweeps/vacuums and dusts classrooms.

  • Cleans corridors after school each day and during the day when their condition requires it.

  • Scrubs, hoses down and disinfects restroom/locker room floors daily and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.

  • Washes windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year and more frequently if necessary.

  • Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.

  • Performs such yard-keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, and the like, as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.

  • Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.

  • Cleans all chalkboards and whiteboards at least once a week.

  • Makes minor building repairs, e.g. light bulbs, light ballasts, light switches, faucet washers, flush valves, etc.

  • Reports major repairs needed promptly to the principal and supervisor.

  • Maintains on a regular schedule all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.

  • Reports immediately to the principal and supervisor any damage to school property.

  • Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required by the administration.

  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining before leaving that all doors and windows are secured and all lights except those left on for safety reasons are turned off.

  • Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment and fuel on hand and requisitions such needed replacements from the supervisor far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such times as will not hinder the custodian in his/her duties.

  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair in cooperation with the Director of Operations.

  • Moves furniture and equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal and supervisor.

  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the appropriate storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, waste, and chemicals.

  • Conducts periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the building to insure their safe condition.

  • Cooperates with and works in a courteous manner with students, faculty and staff.

  • Inspects and ensures all playground equipment is well maintained and safe at all times.

  • Performs other such duties as assigned by the Director of Building and Grounds.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    Full-time, year round position.

    Competitive hourly rate based upon negotiated Master Contract.
