Job Description

The 8th Judicial District of the Iowa Judicial Branch has an immediate opening for a Judicial Specialist 2 position in the Wapello County Clerk of Court office in Ottumwa, Iowa. The position performs clerical tasks in maintaining and processing court records and materials as well as assisting customers with court-related matters.

The starting salary for new State employees is expected to be at the base of the pay range. The starting pay for this position is $18.59 hourly / $1,487.20 bi-weekly / $38,667.20 annually. Adjustments may be made if the successful applicant has relevant experience.

Location: Wapello County, Ottumwa, IA

Hours:Monday – Friday 8:00A – 4:30P

Under the supervision of the Clerk of Court, major duties include:

  • Processing electronically filed court documents

  • Assisting court users over the phone and at the public counter

  • Conducting financial transactions

  • Provide excellent customer service by assisting and communicating with court users in a professional, courteous and respectful manner

  • Coordinate, communicate and collaborate on work with team members to ensure efficient and accurate case processing of court documents and financial transactions

  • Occasional travel to neighboring counties as needed

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school (or High School Equivalency) and two (2) years of successful completion of accredited post high school education in business, paralegal, computer, legal assistant or related program.

  • Two (2) years of professional office experience in business, court or legal work or a related area with one (1) year of the experience involving customer service. At the discretion of the appointing authority additional years of experience may be substituted for the required post high school education.

Or, the successful completion of additional years of education (i.e., Bachelor’s Degree) may be substituted for years of experience on the basis that successful completion of thirty (30) semester hours or academic equivalent equals one year of experience. Education cannot be substituted for customer service experience.
