L.L. Pelling Company, Inc. CDL Equipment Operator in Sigourney, Iowa

LL Pelling is looking for a heavy equipment operator with a Class A or B commercial driver's license to join our South chip seal crew. Candidates must have reliable transportation to reach the designated meetup sites across southern Iowa, such as Sigourney, South English, and Keota, where the crew meets before carpooling to job sites in a company-provided truck. The position involves operating equipment such as a rubber roller as well as performing manual labor from late April through the end of October. Although this is a seasonal position, we offer a full year-round benefits package.

Schedule

Days and hours of work vary and may include weekend work based on weather, project size, and location.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy construction equipment such as a rubber tire roller.

  • Shovel, lute, and rake aggregate (rock).

  • Load and unload trucks, haul and hoist materials, transport rakes, lutes, shovels, and tools to the job site.

  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools.

  • Control traffic on job sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas.

  • Maintain a clean job site - pick up all tools and equipment each day.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Must have regular dependable attendance to be physically present each day.

  • Must be able to drive to job sites and company locations using company provided vehicle.

  • Able to listen to, understand, and follow instructions in English.

  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

    Education and Experience

  • Valid Class A or B commercial driver's license with insurable driving record.

  • At least 6 months experience operating heavy equipment.

    Physical Requirements

  • Able to work in all weather conditions.

  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to operate heavy equipment and perform strenuous manual tasks for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to work safely alongside moving construction equipment, general laborers, and open lanes of traffic in both day and night conditions.

Work Environment

Job hazards include exposure to dust, noise, fumes, and all types of weather conditions. The noise level is usually loud. Operators are regularly exposed to, and work alongside, moving heavy construction equipment, pedestrians, and open lanes of traffic in both day and night conditions. Vehicles may travel at speeds in excess of 70 mph.
