Job Description

This is a non-merit position with the Department of Insurance & Financial Services - Banking. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

The Iowa Division of Banking is seeking candidates for at least oneFinancial Services (Bank) Examinerposition who will conduct safety and soundness examinations of state-charted banks.

One position will be assigned to the Division's Region 1 (SE Iowa), with a strong preference for candidates willing to live in Region 1. Other positions (if filled) may be flexible as to location for the right candidate. Travel is required.

The Iowa Division of Banking is a state agency charged with the supervision and regulation of state-chartered commercial banks in Iowa. The bank examiner position provides a great opportunity for an individual to participate in bank examinations designed to assess a financial institution’s overall financial condition and compliance with laws and regulations. The Iowa Division of Banking is committed to providing its employees with internal and external training opportunities to stay abreast of changes in regulations and the current challenges facing the banking industry.

Qualifications Required:

  • A degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major field of study in accounting, banking, business administration, commercial or banking law, economics, finance, business education, or another business-related field; or at least two years of experience in auditing, accounting, banking, examining financial institutions or in an occupation which provides knowledge of accounting or auditing principles and practices.

  • A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher

  • Minimum of 6 hours of accounting

  • A valid driver’s license (travel required)

    The successful candidate(s) will conduct and direct examinations of state-chartered banks, their holding companies, subsidiaries, and affiliates. When not supervising/directing the examination, the employee assists in the examination of an institution and may be assigned the responsibility for supervising/directing the evaluation of a segment of the examination. Work assignments are performed under the direction and review of the Regional Manager, their designee, a designated examiner-in-charge (regardless of grade level), or the central office. Work products submitted will be technically correct and require no significant changes.

    Region 1 includes the following counties: Dubuque, Jones, Jackson, Cedar, Clinton, Scott, Iowa, Johnson, Muscatine, Keokuk, Washington, Louisa, Wapello, Jefferson, Henry, Des Moines, Davis, Van Buren, and Lee.

    Candidates willing to live in Region 1 are strongly preferred for a position in Region 1.

    Salary commensurate with experience within State of Iowa pay grade 39(-06) (which starts at $70,824.00).

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting, banking, business, real estate, administration, economics, finance, information technology, computer science, cybersecurity or a related field.

  • A total of four years of education (as described in number one) and/or full-time experience, where one year of full-time experience in accounting, auditing, banking, budgeting, assessment or computation of taxes, examining financial institutions or closely related financial functions (e.g., treasurer, comptroller, accountant, auditor, budget analyst, etc.) equals thirty semester hours of education.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
