LOCATION: Story City, IA

SUMMARY:Directly supervises production employees and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following as well as other duties as assigned.

SAFETY

  • Leads safety efforts throughout slitting and pouch departments.

  • Responsible for safety performance of slitting and pouch employees and safety systems and procedures in slitting and pouch departments.

  • Participates in training, embrace concepts of, and actively practice the SPOT Safety Program fundamentals to aid American Packaging Corporation’s efforts to achieve a zero-accident rate.

  • Reviews all observations related to slitting and pouch and accepts responsibility for follow up.

  • Completes incident investigations and send them out by email before the end of the shift when an incident happens.

  • Completes follow-up investigation and TOR with the department manager within 24 hours.

  • Conducts roll call at assembly points for fire and tornado drills.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as management representative responsible for slitting and pouch operations.

  • Exhibits strong communication with finishing department manager and pouch department manager on all process and personnel issues.

  • Sets production targets for each machine and works with team to achieve production targets.

  • Provides regular feedback during shift to slitting and pouch operators and helpers on progress towards achieving the daily production targets.

  • Makes decisions concerning troubleshooting and employee issues.

  • Knows, understands, implements, and enforces plant procedures and policies.

  • Leads teams formed to deal with production, manufacturing, and safety issues.

  • Conducts follow-up and compiles documentation for employees when they are not meeting expectations regarding attendance, SPOT cards, APC Academy and other safety and HR related requirements.

  • Conducts daily 5s shift audits to ensure department is maintaining order and items are being staged or stored in their designated locations.

  • Compiles Daily Shift Report and sends it out at the end of each shift.

  • Reviews and signs off on any WIP material consumed under different job number.

  • Adjusts crews accordingly to maximize production and to minimize OT, where applicable.

  • Embraces concept of shared resources and work cell design to organize the shift.

  • Signs off on slitter, dr winder and pouch jobs.

  • Completes reviews and performance discussions with employees.

  • Participates in and generates ideas for department continuous improvement efforts.

  • Reviews location sheet for WIP rolls not located or issued properly.

  • Schedules and prioritizes dr winds by release.

  • Conducts shift hand off with outgoing slitting and finishing supervisor to discuss any issues with job or machine.

  • Troubleshoots and runs all equipment within the department, if applicable.

  • Troubleshoots and resolves issues with job orders and specs.

  • Checks setups and reviews upcoming specs to be sure they’re clear and match job order.

  • Embraces and implements Kanban or other inventory management system for the department supplies: pallets, cores, slitting knives, corrugated and all packaging supplies.

  • Works with slitting and pouch operators and helpers for proper cross training within the department.

  • Works with technical and QA for disposition of material on hold and returned material.

  • Has the ability to work various hours on short notice for special projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or minimum of one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
