JOB TITLE: FOOD SERVICE WORKER

REPORTS TO: Food Service Director and Head Cook

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt - Hourly

BASIC FUNCTION: The Food Service Worker performs food preparation, stocking, serving, occasional cashiering, cleanup and dish-washing as well as necessary communications to provide safe, nutritious, and appealing food in a pleasant environment as required by the Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District.

SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent required.

  • Ability to work with colleagues and supervisors as an effective Team Member.

  • Must have strong leadership, management and organizational skills.

  • Basic Technology Skills and Effective Communication Skills.

  • Ability to operate food service equipment and appliances in a safe manner.

  • Some experience in the food service industry with experience in a school nutrition program preferred.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 178 -Day Contract.

  • The VSCSD Board of Directors establishes hourly wage & work year.

EVALUATION: The Food Service Director and Head Cook evaluate the performance of this job.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Follows local, state, and federal regulations and policies for School Meal Programs.

  • Records and reports documentation required for compliance with federal, state, and local school meals regulations.

  • Maintains confidential information.

  • Maintains records and reports for accurate school meal data.

  • Reports safety hazards and equipment failures to Head Cook or Food Service Director.

  • Maintains work area in a sanitary, safe, and efficient manner.

  • Uses reporting and inventory systems and maintains records as required.

  • Practices courteous service to customers and treats co-workers respectfully to provide a pleasant environment in the kitchen, serving areas, and dining room.

  • Participates in training and instruction as deemed necessary by the District.

  • Accepts and implements instructions in a positive, cooperative manner.

  • Accepts recommendations for performance improvement.

  • Assists in training co-workers as requested by Head Cook.

  • Follows food preparation and kitchen safety procedures.

  • Employee is responsible to be knowledgeable of all District policies and procedures.

  • Assist with the planning and preparation of any special meals required for district-sponsored events.

  • Provide assistance and suggestions for the preparation and serving of government surplus foods.

  • Assist Food Service Director and Head Cook in the inspection of school lunch facilities and operations to ensure that standards of diet, cleanliness, health, and safety are being maintained.

  • Assist in maintaining levels of cleanliness, health and safety.

  • Performs other reasonable related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques.

  • Able to sit, reach, carry, push, bend body at waist, bend both knees, twist, and stoop while handling items.

  • Able to hear and speak to communicate with clients, other workers, and supervisors.

  • Able to read recipes and employee handbook.

  • Able to see at close range and distinguish colors for judging appearance, condition, and attractiveness of food.

  • Able to answer, communicate, and dial the telephone in a clear, precise voice.

  • Occasionally operate cash register quickly and accurately to move clients through checkout line.

  • Able to work in confined spaces, such as walk-in freezers and coolers, and small storage areas.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Will be required to work in confined spaces such as walk-in freezers with temperatures well below zero.

  • Will be required to use food service equipment that may create extreme temperatures with steam and high heat.

  • May be subject to working with strong detergents or potentially hazardous chemicals.

  • Will be required to stand when serving, operating a computer or food service meal tracking machine

  • May be required to work additional hours as required for special events or during certain times of the year.
