Terms of Employment:194 or 196 days, depending on experience within WCSD

Position Criteria:

  • Valid Iowa teaching license, required
  • 5-12 Counseling license, required
  • Successful demonstration of and experience as a secondary school counselor that demonstrates a commitment and adherence to the academic development, career development, and personal/social development of all students while demonstrating the ability to maintain levels of integrity, leadership and professionalism, as defined by the ASCA Standards and ASCA Ethical Standards of School Counselors, required
  • Successful demonstration of and experience as an at-risk counselor and ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills associated with at-risk programming, mental health services and community resources, preferred

Performance Criteria:

  • Knowledge of the high school learner based on current research.
  • Coordination of at-risk programming in collaboration with interventionists, administrators and teachers.
  • Ability to communicate and involve parents and communities in supporting student learning and healthy development, including sensitive topics at times.
  • Use of pedagogically appropriate/best practice instructional methods and a rigorous curriculum designedto prepare all students to achieve higher standards and become lifelong learners.
  • Targeted intervention support based on diagnostic assessments and progress monitoring.
  • Support implementation of MTSS process, including functional behavioral assessment.
  • Develop and monitor accommodations, interventions and formalized plans including, but not limited to: 504 Plans, and Individualized Education Plans (IEP).
  • Case management for at-risk students, following compliance with programming criteria.
  • Advocate for students' success in all areas (academics, social/emotional, behavior).
  • Before and after school student and family support and advocacy.
  • Determine and implement discipline, in compliance with district policy and building expectations.
  • Ongoing collaboration with teachers, interventionists, administrators, and families.
  • Delivery of professional development in a variety of ways to enhance staff knowledge in the areas of such as working with at-risk students, implementing MTSS process, etc.
  • Communicate regularly with student's family about the progress the student is making
  • Preference is given to applicant with demonstrated knowledge of differentiating instruction, project-based learning, the use of data to guide instruction, the Common Core, and Universal Constructs.
  • Knowledge and experience with processes and procedures within State of Iowa approved student-information data systems.
  • Ability to be a member of a Professional Learning Community and an understanding of key processes in a Professional Learning Community.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional growth and development as described in the Iowa Professional Development Standards and support of the Iowa Teaching Standards as the foundation from which to build that ongoing growth plan.
